Fluorescently Labelled Latex Particles to Monitor Film Formation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Latex film formation has been of commercial importance for many years, particularly in the paint industry. Since the 1960s latex paints have largely replaced oil-based paints, which have been known to contain hazardous amounts of lead. The film formation process begins with latex particles in an aqueous dispersion. As the water evaporates, the particles come into close contact and start deforming before they coalesce and the polymer chains interdiffuse. The interparticle polymer diffusion (IPD) undergone by the polymer chains leads to the formation of a homogenous film with good mechanical properties. Several methods have been investigated in the past to probe IPD, but all have significant drawbacks. A new method recently proposed to probe IPD involves the introduction of pyrene labels into the latex particles. Pyrene is a fluorescent molecule, widely used because of its good quantum yield and high molar extinction coefficient, which makes it possible to acquire noise-free fluorescence spectra at low pyrene concentrations. Pyrene is typically excited in the UV region, and fluoresces with a lifetime τM. If an excited pyrene molecule encounters a ground-state pyrene, an excimer is formed which emits with a lifetime τE. The reaction scheme for pyrene excimer formation is depicted in Figure 1 along with the corresponding fluorescence spectrum.

Use of a Routh-Russel deformation map to achieve film formation of a latex with a high glass transition temperature.
In the film formation of latex, particle deformation can occur by processes of wet sintering, dry sintering, or capillary action. When latex films dry nonuniformly and when particles deform and coalesce while the film is still wet, a detrimental skin layer will develop at the film surface. In their process model, Routh and Russel proposed that the operative particle deformation mechanism can be...
متن کاملOptimisation of the environmental scanning electron microscope for observation of drying of matt water-based lacquers.
Environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) modifies conventional SEM through the use of a partial gas pressure in the microscope specimen chamber. Like conventional SEM, it has the resolution to image structure on the submicron lengthscale, but can also tolerate hydrated specimens if water vapour is used in the specimen chamber. This ability to image aqueous specimens leaves ESEM uniquel...

Cloisite Na+was used as a solid surfactant (stabilizer) in Pickering emulsion polymerization of styrene-co-butyl acrylate in presence of oil soluble initiator, azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and water soluble initiator, potassium persulfate (KPS). Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum approved the corporation of Cloisite Na+ layers within the polymer matrix. Effect of clay content was a...
متن کاملDirect Observation of the Dynamics of Latex Particles Confined inside Thinning Water-Air Films
The dynamics of micrometer-size polystyrene latex particles confined in thinning foam films was investigated bymicroscopic interferometric observation. The behavior of the entrapped particles depends on the mobility of the film surfaces, the particle concentration, hydrophobicity, and rate of film formation. When the filmswere stabilized by sodium dodecyl sulfate, no entrapment of particles bet...
متن کاملSkin Development during the Film Formation of Waterborne Acrylic Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives containing Tackifying Resin
Tackifying resins (TR) are often used to improve the adhesive properties of waterborne pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) derived from latex dispersions. There is a large gap in the understanding of how, and to what extent, the film formation mechanism of PSAs is altered by the addition of TR. Herein, magnetic resonance profiling experiments show that the addition of TR to an acrylic latex cre...
